Expansion at Egypt’s St. Catherine International Airport

St. Catherine International Airport Expansion to Support Tourism Development in South Sinai

St. Catherine International Airport in South Sinai, Egypt, is undergoing a major expansion as part of the country’s Great Transfiguration Project, a government-backed initiative aimed at developing the area into an international tourism destination.

The redevelopment includes a new 3,000-metre runway, an expanded aircraft apron with space for up to eight aircraft, and a new passenger terminal capable of handling 600 passengers per hour. The terminal will include separate domestic and international arrival and departure lounges, as well as a VIP facility.

Gate Technologies supplied bespoke check-in counters, passport booths, departure gate and various additional counters in the terminal building. We developed the architects design then manufactured everything in the UK. Installation was carried out by our partner Aska International under our supervision.

Supporting infrastructure includes a new air traffic control tower, port security building, rescue and fire station, maintenance facilities and warehouse.

The wider Great Transfiguration Project, funded by Egypt’s New Urban Communities Authority, also includes the construction of eco-lodges, mountain hotels, a new residential neighbourhood in Zaitouna and housing for local Bedouin communities.
